I was born and raised in Winnipeg (I now live in Ottawa), so I&#8217;ve learned to &#8220;appreciate&#8221; winter.\u00a0 But there are times when I feel the chill in my bones, and need to get away to someplace warm.\u00a0 My choice is Florida.<\/p>\n<h4>Photography Mecca<\/h4>\n<p>I first heard about Florida through friends.\u00a0 They indicated that it&#8217;s one of the best places in North America to photograph wildlife, in particular birds.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t agree more.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a saying, &#8220;If you can&#8217;t get a great bird picture in Florida, you shouldn&#8217;t have a camera!\u201d.\u00a0 I\u2019ve found this to be remarkably true.\u00a0 The birds are literally in the ditches along the roads.\u00a0 It\u2019s incredible!<\/p>\n<h4>February Trip<\/h4>\n<p>So each February, I make the long drive from Ottawa, to the great winter escape, a sunny destination in Florida.\u00a0 There are wildlife viewing opportunities in Florida all year around, but I like February because it gives me a break from the cold temperatures of Ottawa, and the weather is simply perfect.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience, the weather is pretty consistent during February.\u00a0 The highs are generally in the mid-twenties (Celsius), and overnight lows in the mid-teens (Celsius).\u00a0 There is some variation depending on the location.\u00a0 Check your favorite weather website for specifics.<\/p>\n<h4>Locations<\/h4>\n<p>There are literally hundreds of wildlife locations in Florida.\u00a0 Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>St. Mark&#8217;s National Wildlife Refuge (Tallahassee area)<\/li>\n<li>Augustine&#8217;s Alligator Farm (Jacksonville area)<\/li>\n<li>Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (Titusville area)<\/li>\n<li>Gatorland (Orlando area)<\/li>\n<li>Everglades National Park (Miami area)<\/li>\n<li>Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge (Fort Myers area)<\/li>\n<li>Fort De Soto Park (Tampa area)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each offers an interesting experience with many possible roads and walking trails.\u00a0 So, check out the Internet, and dedicated websites, for more information.<\/p>\n<h4>Insects<\/h4>\n<p>I haven\u2019t found bug spray to be needed. The temperatures are generally cooler at night, so insects like mosquitoes don\u2019t get a chance to breed.\u00a0 Also, I haven\u2019t needed sunscreen, even with fair skin like mine.\u00a0 I always have both with me though, just in case \u2026<\/p>\n<h4>Clothes<\/h4>\n<p>I tend to wear t-shirts and long pants when in the bush because I have had both Poison Ivy and Poison Oak in the past.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t wish either on anybody.\u00a0 Color-wise, I use camouflage, in an effort to be less conspicuous to wildlife.\u00a0 It works.\u00a0 Failing that, dark, earth-tones will work best.\u00a0 Please keep in mind that birds generally have great eyesight.\u00a0 Bright colors stick out like a sore thumb.<\/p>\n<h4>Restrooms<\/h4>\n<p>Most of the locations I have visited provide washrooms, but this could be as simple as a portable outhouse.\u00a0 Some have information centers and restaurants.\u00a0 Do yourself a favor and take advantage of them.\u00a0 They have a lot to offer.<\/p>\n<h4>Roadways<\/h4>\n<p>Roadways are generally good, but the best photography spots are often down goat trails that require 4-wheel drive vehicles to traverse.\u00a0 Some of the bigger places have groomed or paved &#8220;nature&#8221; paths\/drives so that all may enjoy during a leisurely walk, or from the comfort of their car.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, exercise caution when exploring remote locations.\u00a0 Alligators and snakes can be found in most areas, even as close as the roadside ditches.\u00a0 And while neither is likely to attack you out-of-the-blue, provoking or stepping on one, could be dangerous.<\/p>\n<h4>Entrance Fees<\/h4>\n<p>Entrance fees are not outrageous.\u00a0 In my experience, the average is about $5 per day per car.\u00a0 Some places have weekly rates.\u00a0 Check the location\u2019s webpage, read the signs, or talk with the park Rangers for further information.<\/p>\n<h4>Accommodation<\/h4>\n<p>Accommodation has a fair amount of variation. \u00a0You can find a room for as little as $500US for a week, to well over $2000US per week.\u00a0 It really depends on where you stay, and the amenities.\u00a0 Check websites like Booking.com and Expedia.com for deals.\u00a0 Try to have your reservations done early though, as the rooms fill up quickly.<\/p>\n<h4>Dining<\/h4>\n<p>Dining and night life also varies from location to location.\u00a0 Strictly speaking, neither is particularly good near the best wildlife areas.\u00a0 The reason, the animals can be found in remote locations, away from people.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that these things can\u2019t be had.\u00a0 But rather, it simply means that you might have to travel a little farther to find what you are after.<\/p>\n<h4>People<\/h4>\n<p>You will see and meet people from many walks of life in the\u00a0 great winter escape.\u00a0 Some are there for the wildlife.\u00a0 Others are there to enjoy being out in nature.\u00a0 I have met folks from as far as Germany, lots of fellow Canadians, and of course many friendly Americans.\u00a0 Whoever you happen to come across, please be respectful.\u00a0 Save your conversations until you are back at the parking lot.\u00a0 Loud noises and talk can frighten wildlife, and potentially ruin the moment for everyone involved.<\/p>\n<h4>Conclusion<\/h4>\n<p>To summarize, Florida can be a great place for the great winter escape.\u00a0 Focus on photographing wildlife as\u00a0 there are a number of different habitats available, each offering unique experiences.\u00a0 But don\u2019t expect to see everything in one trip.\u00a0 There is simply too much.\u00a0 My advice, pick an area of interest, determine four or five sites in that area, and devote a day to each.\u00a0 You won\u2019t be disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re like me, there are times you&#8217;re looking for  [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4527,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[244],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1065","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-images-from-the-natural-world"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
