{"id":1082,"date":"2016-11-13T16:39:20","date_gmt":"2016-11-13T21:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/?p=1082"},"modified":"2024-02-26T20:34:24","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T01:34:24","slug":"hiring-a-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/2016\/11\/13\/hiring-a-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Hiring a Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignleft wp-image-2728 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSC8419_DxO-jpg.webp\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSC8419_DxO-jpg.webp\" alt=\"hiring a guide\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27450%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20450%20300%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27450%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSC8419_DxO-200x133.webp 200w, https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSC8419_DxO-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSC8419_DxO-400x267.webp 400w, https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSC8419_DxO-jpg.webp 450w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>I\u2019ve mentioned this before; wildlife photography is about getting that perfect shot.\u00a0 You know the one I mean.\u00a0 The one that elicits admiration and kudos from family, friends, and those in the industry.\u00a0 But it isn\u2019t always easy, particularly in a new location.\u00a0 Unfamiliarity with the terrain, surroundings, and inherent wildlife, can make getting that perfect shot a daunting task.\u00a0 So how do you counter this?\u00a0 How do you even the odds?\u00a0 There are a number of things you can do; research, preparation, and some luck will certainly help.\u00a0 But there is no substitute for local knowledge.\u00a0 And that is where hiring a guide comes in.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the places you will visit are vast, and contain a number of different habitats that you can explore.\u00a0 Yellowstone Park in Wyoming, as an example, is over 2 million acres in size.\u00a0 Another example, Everglades National Park, is also quite large and contains a number of varying terrains, including a significant amount of water.\u00a0 This has to be taken into consideration.\u00a0 And what about wildlife?\u00a0 Wolves, Bison, Alligators, and Snakes (including those that are poisonous) all pose considerable risk.<\/p>\n<h4>Safety<\/h4>\n<p>So how do you ensure that you get the images you want as safely as possible?\u00a0 As you might imagine, there isn\u2019t a simple answer.\u00a0 Hiring a guide is certainly possible, but there are a number of things that come into play.\u00a0 For example, you need to consider the following once you decide on a destination:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do I get to the destination?<\/li>\n<li>Is there more than one area within the destination you want to visit?<\/li>\n<li>Can I walk to each area, or do I need to drive?<\/li>\n<li>What wildlife should you expect in each area?<\/li>\n<li>What time of day is best to see this wildlife?<\/li>\n<li>What equipment will you need to capture the images you want?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of these you\u2019ll know the answers to, some can be answered using the Internet, and for the remainder, you\u2019ll need help.\u00a0 That is where local knowledge is invaluable.<\/p>\n<h4>Hiring Guides<\/h4>\n<p>A hiring a guide can simplify the process immensely.\u00a0 They will readily know the answers to these questions, that\u2019s their business.\u00a0 You should also know that a good guide costs money.\u00a0 Expect to pay between $500 US\/day to $1000 US\/day for a good one, depending on the services they provide.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had some that ride along with me in my vehicle, while others provide a vehicle, meals, and accommodation. \u00a0It really depends on what you need.<\/p>\n<h4>Guides Themselves<\/h4>\n<p>Also, take the time to look at what other customers have to say about the guide.\u00a0 Internet research is invaluable in this regard.\u00a0 Failing that, here are some questions that you can ask that might help you determine a guide\u2019s suitability:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever provided guide services of this type before? It isn\u2019t necessarily bad if they haven\u2019t, they could be new to the industry.\u00a0 But you would like some sort of experience in other areas, which we\u2019ll talk about in a moment.<\/li>\n<li>If so, can you provide a brief description of them? Try to get a feel for how this experience is related to your needs.<\/li>\n<li>Are you a photographer yourself? This is important, particularly if they don\u2019t have other guide experience.\u00a0 Photography guides have certain practicalities that you want.\u00a0 For example, they are quiet, they know wildlife, and they turn off the engine when stopping to photograph from the vehicle.\u00a0 The little things that will promote you getting the best shot possible.<\/li>\n<li>If so, for how long? Obviously, more is better here.<\/li>\n<li>When approaching wildlife in a car, would you describe your steps for me? This will vary somewhat depending on the guide.\u00a0 But what you want to see here is that they don\u2019t approach too close.\u00a0 That they turn the engine off to reduce vibration.\u00a0 And they suggest getting out if that is safe, and possible.<\/li>\n<li>When approaching wildlife on foot, would you describe your steps for me? Again, this will vary.\u00a0 But you want to see them using as much of the natural terrain to hide themselves.\u00a0 You want them to stress being quiet.\u00a0 And you want to hear them suggest slow, methodical movement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Above all, don\u2019t be afraid to ask questions.\u00a0 It\u2019s your money.\u00a0 Don\u2019t make the deal until you are satisfied.<\/p>\n<h4>Guide Standards<\/h4>\n<p>I doubt this will comes as a surprise, but not all guides are equal. \u00a0\u00a0In my experience, they range from super experienced wildlife photographers and naturalists, to bozos with a boat that think they are guides.\u00a0 Be careful!\u00a0 For someone like me, bozos are not so bad.\u00a0 My experience can compensate for them \u2026 as long as they listen.\u00a0 But for those of you that are new, and relying on the guide, do your homework.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to gamble your hard-earned money, or your safety, on these bozos.<\/p>\n<p>Hiring a guide can be a valuable asset.\u00a0 Their local knowledge can help you get the kind of adventure you hoped for.\u00a0 But be careful.\u00a0 There are those out there that are simply looking to take your money.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve mentioned this before; wildlife photography is about getting that  [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2728,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[244],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1082","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-images-from-the-natural-world"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
