{"id":903,"date":"2016-10-19T02:58:22","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T06:58:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/?p=903"},"modified":"2024-02-26T20:49:08","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T01:49:08","slug":"birding-in-and-around-ottawa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/2016\/10\/19\/birding-in-and-around-ottawa\/","title":{"rendered":"Birding in and Around Ottawa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignleft wp-image-2776 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/PICT0053_DxO-jpg.webp\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/PICT0053_DxO-jpg.webp\" alt=\"birding in and around ottawa\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27450%27%20height%3D%27299%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20450%20299%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27450%27%20height%3D%27299%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/PICT0053_DxO-200x133.webp 200w, https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/PICT0053_DxO-300x199.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/PICT0053_DxO-400x266.webp 400w, https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/PICT0053_DxO-jpg.webp 450w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>Birding in and around Ottawa can be a time consuming activity.\u00a0 Driving, searching, watching, it never seems to end.\u00a0 I, myself, have spent hundreds of hours over the years searching for these beautiful, and often, elusive creatures.\u00a0 Sometimes I\u2019m successful, and sometimes I\u2019m not.\u00a0 But like most things, if you want to have any success at all, you need to know a few things.<\/p>\n<h4>Ottawa<\/h4>\n<p>Ottawa can be a great place for birding.\u00a0 With the green-space that has been set aside, and all of the types of habitat available, it\u2019s hard to image not finding a suitable place to enjoy the activity.<\/p>\n<h4>Tips<\/h4>\n<p>There are a number of things to keep in mind when trying to see, or photograph birds.\u00a0 They are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be quiet. Birds generally have good hearing.<\/li>\n<li>Birds also have good eyesight. Wear clothing that doesn\u2019t make you stick out from the environment.\u00a0 Camouflage is best.\u00a0 But failing that, darker, earth tones work well.<\/li>\n<li>Keep movement to a minimum.\u00a0 I have had birds walk right up to me, and by me, while standing in a stream \u2026 even with babies.\u00a0 Don\u2019t give them a reason to fear you.<\/li>\n<li>Be in-place before sunrise.\u00a0 If you are part of the environment before the birds arrive, and keep motion to a minimum, they will likely ignore you and go about their business.<\/li>\n<li>Return to a place often.\u00a0 Birds will get use to your presence which may give you more opportunities to see and photograph them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bottom line is that following these rules will increase your chances of getting up-close-and-personal with a large variety of birds (as an example, I have tens of thousands of bird images in my library).<\/p>\n<h4>Locations<\/h4>\n<p>There are a number of places to go to see birds in Ottawa.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have enough space to list them all.\u00a0 But here a few places that I have found productive at almost any time of year:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Andrew Haydon Park<\/li>\n<li>The creek in Vincent Massy Park<\/li>\n<li>Mer Bleue Boardwalk<\/li>\n<li>The Britannia Conservation Area (Mud Lake)<\/li>\n<li>Jack Pine Trail<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Generally, you are looking for places with trees or bushes (hiding, and nesting), a fresh water (drinking, washing), and a food source (nuts, seeds, small insects).\u00a0 Obviously, these can vary depending on the bird.\u00a0 But areas with these general characteristics are usually good places to start.<\/p>\n<h4>Activity<\/h4>\n<p>Birds are most active first thing in the morning (sunrise), and towards the end of the day (sunset).\u00a0 The main reason for this is moderate temperatures.\u00a0 Birds feel the heat just like we do, and tend to avoid the high temperature times of the middle of the day.\u00a0 The same thing goes for cold (there are some exceptions), which is why they fly south for the winter.\u00a0 Also, there is usually less wind, and less noise at sunrise and sunset.\u00a0 All of which have an effect.<\/p>\n<p>From a photography perspective, I prefer the morning because of the light quality.\u00a0 It can sometimes be challenging from an exposure perspective, but I prefer the results.\u00a0 This is very much a personal thing, so I leave it to you.<\/p>\n<h4>Photographers and Birders<\/h4>\n<p>I don\u2019t consider myself a true birder, not in the strictest sense.\u00a0 My main focus isn\u2019t simply watching, studying, and keeping stats.\u00a0 I photograph them.\u00a0 I want to capture images of them in their natural environment, doing the things that birds do.\u00a0 So, while many of my habits are the same as birders, they are not exact.<\/p>\n<h4>Conclusion<\/h4>\n<p>Birding in and around Ottawa is a wonderful activity.\u00a0 And whether you\u2019re simply watching, studying, or photographing them as I do, the activity can offer many enjoyable hours out in nature.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Birding in and around Ottawa can be a time consuming  [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2776,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[244],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-903","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-images-from-the-natural-world"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
