{"id":944,"date":"2016-10-23T16:49:40","date_gmt":"2016-10-23T20:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/?p=944"},"modified":"2024-02-26T20:43:31","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T01:43:31","slug":"exposure-modes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/2016\/10\/23\/exposure-modes\/","title":{"rendered":"Exposure Modes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignleft wp-image-2764 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC9963_DxO-jpg.webp\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC9963_DxO-jpg.webp\" alt=\"exposure modes\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27450%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20450%20300%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27450%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC9963_DxO-200x133.webp 200w, https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC9963_DxO-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC9963_DxO-400x267.webp 400w, https:\/\/www.dwgloag.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC9963_DxO-jpg.webp 450w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>As I mentioned in one of my other articles, exposure is everything in photography.\u00a0 What I\u2019m going to talk about in this article are exposure modes.\u00a0 The ways camera makers speed up the process of selecting the correct exposure.<\/p>\n<h4>Basic Modes<\/h4>\n<p>Most modern-day cameras have a number of modes, or settings, that assist the photographer in obtaining the correct exposure.\u00a0 In other words, they are the means to set the exposure triangle (Aperture, Shutter-Speed, ISO) for a given situation.\u00a0 Here are some basic modes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Manual Mode<\/li>\n<li>Aperture Priority Semi-Automatic Mode<\/li>\n<li>Shutter-Speed Priority Semi-Automatic Mode<\/li>\n<li>Program Mode<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some cameras have even more, but these are specific instances, or variations, of the ones listed.<\/p>\n<h4>Manual Mode<\/h4>\n<p>This mode requires you to set all three of the exposure triangle elements.\u00a0 It is by far the slowest to set, but it gives the most precise control.\u00a0 You start by setting the ISO, select a shutter-speed, then lastly, adjust the aperture so that the camera\u2019s light meter is in the middle.\u00a0 You can start the process with any element in the exposure triangle.<\/p>\n<h4>Aperture Priority Semi-Automatic Mode<\/h4>\n<p>Around the mid-eighties, camera manufacturers created a mode called semi-automatic.\u00a0 The idea was to set two of three exposure triangle elements in advance, and the camera would automatically set the last one as you depressed the shutter button to capture an image.<\/p>\n<p>This semi-automatic mode requires you to set Aperture and ISO, then determines the Shutter-Speed automatically.<\/p>\n<p>This mode is useful when you know the depth of field you want (aperture) for an image, and aren\u2019t as concerned about the Shutter-Speed.\u00a0 For example, this is the mode I use when I\u2019m shooting wildlife.\u00a0 I\u2019m very concerned about depth-of-field (I normally choose f\/6.7), but not usually concerned about Shutter-Speed.<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t ignore it. In some low light situations, you could get a Shutter-Speed so slow that you can\u2019t hand-hold the shot.<\/p>\n<h4>Shutter Speed Priority Semi-Automatic Mode<\/h4>\n<p>This requires you to set Shutter-Speed and ISO, then determines the Aperture automatically.<\/p>\n<p>This mode is useful when you know the Shutter-Speed you want for an image, and aren\u2019t as concerned about the Aperture (depth-of-field).\u00a0 For example, this is the mode I use when I\u2019m shooting sports.\u00a0 I\u2019m very concerned about stopping the action, (I like to choose something like 1\/300 of a second) but not usually concerned about Aperture (depth-of-field).<\/p>\n<p>But again, don&#8217;t ignore it.\u00a0 In some low light situations, you could get an Aperture so large (narrow depth-of-field) that some of your subject becomes out-of-focus.<\/p>\n<h4>Fully-Automatic Program Mode<\/h4>\n<p>This mode was created a few years after the semi-automatic modes.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t set anything.\u00a0 Essentially, you have a point-and-shoot camera.\u00a0 Why not?\u00a0 If semi-auto is faster, wouldn\u2019t full-auto be faster still?<\/p>\n<p>Well, in a word, yes, but there is a price.<\/p>\n<p>In any given situation, the settings chosen by the camera may not be identical from shot to shot.\u00a0 How can that be?\u00a0 Through the sensor, various light levels are determined.\u00a0 This pattern is then compared to an internal database of patterns that tell the camera what settings to choose for that particular shot.\u00a0 The problem, light in a particular situation can change slightly from moment to moment, even in a closed situation like a studio.\u00a0 This, in turn, can change the camera\u2019s setting selection.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, these changes are most often subtle.\u00a0 But they can have an effect.<\/p>\n<h4>Conclusion<\/h4>\n<p>Unlike most techniques, Exposure Modes must always be used.\u00a0 It is up to you which you\u2019d like to use.\u00a0 Keep in mind, they must be used correctly, if you want to get properly exposed images.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I mentioned in one of my other articles, exposure  [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2764,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[244],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-944","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-images-from-the-natural-world"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
